Topic: Trustees and Advocacy: Critical Issues facing NJ Library Trustees.

There are several critical public policy issues facing New Jersey library trustees. They include:

  1. The public vote on the referendum to approve $125 million in bond funding for New Jersey Public Libraries.
  2. The weakening of school library media programs. Many school districts have eliminatedschool library l media positions . In addition, New Jersey does not have an information literacy curriculum for students. Many other states already require information literacy as an educational component for all students. There are two bills in the legislature which would address these issuesA4500/ S3258would require a specific number of school media specialists in each school building.A 4858would establish an k-12 information literacy curriculum in all schools.
  3. The ability to vote to increase library millage above 1/3 mil. A1427has already passed the NJ Assembly. We needS2633, its companion bill,to pass the Senatebefore the end of this current legislation term.
